H&R
Ölwerke Schindler GmbH

H&R Ölwerke Schindler GmbH runs a speciality refinery in Hamburg. The refinery was established in 1920 as a plant for producing base oils, high-quality special oils for the turbine and automobile industry as well as white oils.

In the 1950s the refinery was taken over by the mineral oil company BP which, in the following years, developed the site into the central lubricant refinery in Germany. The expansion of the plants and the technology was continuously invested in. The business relationship with H&R that had already begun in 1920 was particularly intensified from the 1960s and by the end of the 1980s developed into around 100,000 t of specialties. At the start of 2004 the refinery was then bought by H&R and integrated into the H&R ChemPharm group. Combined with the associated refinery in Salzbergen, the consistent alignment to the production of highly refined specialities took place.

The logistically convenient location in the expanding Hamburg harbour is an important competitive advantage and a guarantee for the success of the site, the products of which are sent all over the world.

H&R Ölwerke Schindler are today the global leaders in the production of non-classified softeners for the tire industry. The company has patents for the manufacture of a new product generation that excels with a simultaneously high environmental sustainability and first-class quality. In 2005 the existing capacities for production of non-classified softeners were significantly expanded in order to cover the growing demand of the market. The refinery acts as a competence centre within the group. Further focal points of the production lie in the manufacturing of high-quality white oils, paraffin waxes and base oils. Furthermore, the company operates a large mixing and bottling plant for marine lubricants. By mixing base oils with diverse additives the qualities required by customers can be manufactured exactly. These activities are continuously invested in so that the Hamburg plant can further cement its position as the market leader for marine lubricants.
